Investigation underway after police fatally shoot a Black man in Atlanta at a fast food drive-thru

Authorities in Georgia are reviewing an incident involving the fatal police shooting of Rayshard Brooks on Friday night during an incident at a Wendy’s drive-thru. The 27-year-old was sleeping in his car before the confrontation with the police. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says Brooks obtained a police taser and pointed it an officer.

Atlanta’s police chief resigned Saturday hours after a black man was fatally shot by an officer in a struggle following a field sobriety test. Authorities said the slain man had grabbed an officer’s Taser, but was running away when he was shot.

“During the arrest, the male subject resisted and a struggle ensued,” the Bureau of Investigation said. “The officer deployed a Taser. Witnesses report that during the struggle the male subject grabbed and was in possession of the Taser. It has also been reported that the male subject was shot by an officer in the struggle over the Taser.”

Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced that Atlanta’s Police Chief Erika Shields voluntarily resigned after three-and-a-half years on the job. The resignation comes after the deadly officer-involved shooting of 27-year-old Black man Rayshard Brooks outside a Wendy’s fast food restaurant on Friday night. Bottoms also called for the “immediate termination” of the police officer who killed Brooks.
