Selena Quintanilla
Selena Quintanilla or ‘Selena” Despite having her life tragically cut short, accomplished more than most
artists in her lifetime. She helped put Latin and Tejano music on the mainstream map. Selena began
recording professionally in 1982. In the 1980s, she was often criticized and was refused bookings at
venues across Texas for performing Tejano music—a male-dominated music genre. However, her
popularity grew after she won the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1986, which
she won nine consecutive times after that. She was known as ‘The Queen of Tejano” and her voice
transcended borders in hits like, “Como la Flor” and “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom.” Very few stars have been able
to live up to the Grammy winner’s grace, talent, and ambition. JAMMIN’ one oh one five recognizes
